Venetian Castle of Milos

Venetian Castle of Milos

The Venetian Castle of Milos was built in the 13th century, on the hilltop which now is the Plaka, the capital of the island. Around the castle you will find several churches including the Assumption of the Virgin Mary or Skiniotissa and the church of Panagia Thalassitra.

The usefulness of the castle at that time was to protect the inhabitants from the pirates who acted uncontrolled across the Mediterranean sea. The castle was established by the first Duke of Naxos, Marco Sanudo.

It is worthwhile to climb up the castle, especially during the evening hours in order to enjoy one of the most unique sunsets in Greece.
